But what are cookies?
Cookies are files or piece of data that can be saved onto the user’s computer (or another device that is able to browse the internet, such as smartphones or tablets) when visiting a website. A cookie typically contains the name of the website that the cookie comes from, the duration of the cookie (or the time that the cookie will be stored on the device for) and content (number, string, etc.) that allows it to perform its function.
For more information, visit the English-language website aboutcookies.org.
What are cookies used for?
Cookies are used to make browsing easier and to better adapt the website to the user’s needs. Cookies can also be used to speed up the user’s future experiences and activities on other websites and are used to compile anonymous aggregate statistics that reveal how users use the sites, in order to help improve the structure and content of these sites.
Different types of cookies
Technical cookies: these are cookies that facilitate browsing or provide a service requested by the user. They are not used for any other purposes and are typically installed directly by the manager of the website you are browsing. Without these cookies, certain operations could not be performed or would be more complex and/or less secure (for example, cookies that make it possible to identify and remember the use during the session).
Profiling cookies: these are cookies that are used to track the user’s online browsing and create profiles of their tastes, habits, choices, etc. These cookies make it possible to send advertisements to the user’s device that are consistent with the preferences said user has displayed in their online browsing.
First-part cookies are cookies that are generated and used directly by the manager of the website the user is browsing.
Third-part cookies are cookies that are generated and managed by someone other than the manager of the website the user is browsing (based on a contract between the Data Processor for the website and the third party
Session cookies and Persistent cookies:
While the difference between a first-part cookie and a third-part cookie concerns the subject responsible for initially sending the cookie to your device, the difference between a session cookie and a persistent cookie concerns the difference timeframe that the cookie works for. Session cookies are cookies that typically last until you close your web browser. When you finish your browsing session, the cookie expires. As the name indicates, persistent cookies are cookies that are constant and that continue to work after you have closed your browser.
How can I control how my browser manages cookies?
All modern browsers allow you to control your privacy settings, including the use of cookies. In particular, the user can intervene on the browser’s general behaviour towards cookies (for example, instructing it to NOT accept them in future) and display and/or delete previously installed cookies.
